  • Semdash Review | A Cheaper Semrush & Ahrefs Alternative?

    Featured

In the ever-evolving world of SEO tools, a new contender named Semdash has entered the field, promising similar features to giants like Semrush and Ahrefs but at a fraction of the cost. As someone who has relied heavily on Semrush for years, I was intrigued by this new tool's potential and pricing model. After testing and analyzing Semdash thoroughly, this article will walk you through its features, pricing, performance, and whether it's a smart choice for your SEO needs.

Let's dive deep into what Semdash offers, how it compares to Semrush, and whether it's really the budget-friendly alternative it claims to be.

🔍 Semdash Overview: What Is It?

Semdash is an SEO tool designed to provide domain analysis, keyword research, backlink tracking, and competitive insights, much like Semrush and Ahrefs. Its user interface will feel instantly familiar to anyone who has used other top SEO platforms, which is deliberate. The platform aims to attract users looking for a cheaper SEO tool without sacrificing too much on features.

Once you sign up and log in, the dashboard presents a clean, intuitive layout with reports and tools arranged similarly to other industry leaders. This reduces the learning curve and allows SEO professionals to jump right in.

But the big questions are: Is it really cheaper? And does it deliver accurate, actionable data? Let's explore these aspects starting with domain analysis, one of the core functions of any SEO tool.

📊 Domain Analysis in Semdash: Strengths and Weaknesses

When launching a website or entering a new niche, domain analysis is crucial. I use this to check if others have succeeded in the niche and to evaluate the strength of competitors’ domains. Competing against a powerhouse domain with massive authority and backlinks can be futile, so understanding domain strength is key.

Semdash’s domain overview report is accessed by entering a domain name on the left-hand side panel. For this review, I tested it with my own website, nodesk.fi, which focuses on electricity deal comparisons in Finland.

The domain overview report provides several metrics:

    • Domain Rank: A score from 0 to 100 indicating the domain's authority and ranking potential in Google's eyes.
    • Organic Traffic: Estimated monthly visitors coming from organic search.
    • Number of Ranking Keywords: Total keywords the domain ranks for in search results.
    • Backlinks and Referring Domains: The amount of backlinks and unique domains linking to the website.
    • Broken Pages and Links: Number of broken pages and links detected on the website.
    • Traffic Distribution: Geographic breakdown of visitor origins.
    • Organic Position Distribution: Keywords distribution across different ranking positions.

For nodesk.fi, I noticed the data was mostly accurate when it came to geographic traffic distribution—around 99.8% of visitors come from Finland, with a tiny fraction from Sweden, which aligns perfectly with our target audience.

The organic position distribution also reflected reality quite well, showing most keywords ranking between the top 5 and 50 positions, with specific counts for positions 11-20 matching our actual keyword spread.

However, when looking at the performance metrics like estimated organic traffic, the numbers were significantly off. Semdash reported 17,000 visitors currently, whereas our real Google Analytics data shows closer to 6,000 visitors, with a peak around 10,000. This overestimation can mislead users about how well a website is truly performing.

🔗 Backlink and Competitor Analysis: How Reliable Is Semdash?

Backlink and competitor analysis are vital for understanding your website’s authority and the competitive landscape.

Semdash lists backlinks and referring domains, which in our case showed around 300 backlinks, all naturally acquired without any link-building efforts. This aligns with the reality that quality content earns backlinks organically. However, in my SEO strategy, I rarely focus on backlink reports from tools alone, preferring to prioritize content quality first.

Where Semdash struggled was in identifying true competitors. The tool suggested six competitors for nodesk.fi, but only one was a direct competitor—another electricity deal comparison website. The rest included broad news sites and forums that cover a wide range of topics unrelated to our niche.

This is a critical downside because competitor analysis should help you identify relevant businesses or websites to benchmark against, not unrelated ones.

📅 Data History and Limitations: Semdash’s Shortcomings

One of Semdash’s biggest drawbacks is its limited historical data. The performance metrics section only tracks data back to October 2024, giving about six months of data at most.

For SEO professionals, especially those analyzing website growth or trends, having access to longer historical data is crucial. It allows you to see traffic spikes, dips, and seasonal trends which inform your SEO strategy.

In comparison, Semrush offers data going back more than a decade, and even for newer sites like nodesk.fi, you can view data spanning the entire existence of the site. This provides a much clearer picture of the website’s growth trajectory.

💰 Pricing and Credit System: Is Semdash Really Cheaper?

At first glance, Semdash’s pricing looks attractive. The starter plan costs just $29 per month and includes 1,000 credits. This is significantly cheaper than Semrush’s starter plan, which is priced higher.

However, Semdash operates on a credit system where every action, such as viewing reports or expanding keyword lists, consumes credits. For example, clicking the “View All Keywords” button to see all ranking keywords for a domain cost almost one dollar in credits.

Semdash credits usage when viewing all keywords report

This means if you conduct thorough research across multiple domains, checking detailed reports and metrics, you could quickly burn through your credits. Testing about 40 domains with multiple metrics could easily run up a bill of $100-$200 or more monthly.

In contrast, Semrush’s pricing is higher upfront but offers much more generous limits. Their pro plan allows up to 10,000 results per report and 3,000 reports per day, effectively eliminating credit concerns for most users.

So while Semdash’s sticker price is lower, the credit system makes it potentially more expensive for active users.

⚖️ Semdash vs Semrush: Which Should You Choose?

Based on my hands-on experience, here is a quick comparison of Semdash and Semrush:

    • Accuracy: Semrush provides more accurate traffic data and keyword rankings; Semdash tends to overestimate traffic.
    • Historical Data: Semrush offers extensive historical data, Semdash only six months.
    • Competitor Analysis: Semrush identifies relevant competitors better; Semdash’s suggestions can be irrelevant.
    • Pricing: Semdash has a lower upfront cost but charges per credit, which can add up quickly; Semrush is more expensive but offers better value for heavy users.
    • User Experience: Both tools have similar interfaces, making them easy to navigate for SEO professionals.

Given these points, I would recommend Semrush for serious SEO work due to its accuracy, data depth, and better competitor insights. Semdash might appeal to beginners or those with very light usage, but the credit system is a major caveat.

It’s worth noting that Semdash is currently available on AppSumo with a lifetime deal starting at $69. This could be a good option if you want to avoid monthly fees and are comfortable with the credit limitations.

🔎 FAQ About Semdash and SEO Tools

Is Semdash a good alternative to Semrush?

Semdash offers similar features at a lower upfront cost, but its limited data history, less accurate traffic estimates, and credit system make it less reliable for serious SEO professionals compared to Semrush.

How accurate is Semdash’s traffic data?

While Semdash gets some keyword rankings and traffic sources right, it tends to overestimate organic traffic by a significant margin, which could lead to misleading conclusions.

    Does Semdash provide competitor analysis?

Yes, but the competitor suggestions can be irrelevant or too broad, which undermines the usefulness of this feature.

What are the limitations of Semdash’s credit system?

Each report or action consumes credits, and depending on your research intensity, you may quickly run out of credits in the starter plan, leading to additional costs or limited access.

Is there a free trial for Semdash or Semrush?

Semdash does not offer a free trial as of now, but Semrush offers a 14-day free pro trial. You can activate it through my affiliate link to explore all features risk-free.

🚀 Final Thoughts: Should You Use Semdash?

Semdash is an interesting new player in the SEO tool space, offering a familiar interface and some useful features. Its promise of being a cheaper alternative to Semrush or Ahrefs is somewhat true in terms of sticker price, but its credit-based system and limited data depth make it less practical for serious SEO projects.

For beginners or those with very light SEO needs, Semdash could be a starting point, especially with the AppSumo lifetime deal. However, if you want accurate data, comprehensive historical insights, and reliable competitor analysis, Semrush remains the superior choice.
